The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was introduced by the Canadian government to provide faster processing for eligible international students applying for a study permit. The program was designed to simplify the visa process for students who met specific financial and academic requirements.
At LB Pathway, in collaboration with LandBird Law Firm, we guide students through the Canadian study permit process and help them understand different visa pathways available for studying in Canada.
What Was the Student Direct Stream (SDS)?
The Student Direct Stream was a study permit application pathway created by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to accelerate visa processing for international students who met specific eligibility conditions. Most applications submitted through SDS were processed within approximately 20 calendar days.
The program applied to legal residents of selected countries including India, China, Brazil, Pakistan, Morocco, the Philippines, Vietnam, and several others.
Important Update: SDS Program Changes
Canada discontinued the Student Direct Stream program in November 2024 as part of changes to its international student policies. After this change, all students apply through the standard study permit process instead of a separate SDS pathway.
Although the SDS program is no longer active, understanding its requirements remains helpful because many of the same documents and financial requirements still apply to regular study permit applications.
Key SDS Eligibility Requirements
When the program was active, students had to meet several specific criteria in order to apply through the SDS pathway.
- Letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Proof of full payment of the first year’s tuition
- Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) for living expenses
- Language test results meeting required standards
- Upfront medical examination
These requirements were designed to demonstrate that students were financially prepared and academically ready to study in Canada.
Language Test Requirements
Applicants applying through the SDS pathway typically needed a minimum language test score such as an IELTS score of 6.0 in each band or an equivalent result in other accepted language tests.
Meeting language standards helped ensure that international students could successfully participate in academic programs in Canada.
Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
A key financial requirement for SDS applications was the purchase of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). This investment served as proof that students had funds available to support their living expenses during their first year in Canada.
Once students arrived in Canada, a portion of the funds would be released immediately, with the remainder paid in installments throughout the year.
Required Documents for SDS Applications
- Valid passport
- Letter of acceptance from a Canadian institution
- Proof of first-year tuition payment
- Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)
- Language test results
- Medical examination confirmation
- Academic transcripts
Providing complete and accurate documentation was essential for receiving faster visa processing under the SDS pathway.
Standard Study Permit Process Today
Following the discontinuation of SDS, international students must now apply through the regular Canadian study permit process. Applicants must still demonstrate financial capacity, admission to a recognized institution, and compliance with immigration requirements.
Processing times may vary depending on the applicant’s country of residence and the complexity of the application.
